How should the days be divided between Paris, Provence and the coast?

Three regions, and ten to fourteen nights split roughly evenly between them, is the shape that works. Four to five nights in Paris covers the museums, the tables and one day outside the city. Four to six in Provence covers the perched villages, the domaines and the Roman sites. Five to seven on the French Riviera lets you settle rather than commute. Avignon's TGV station reaches Paris in under three hours and Nice is roughly two hours by car from the Luberon, so the transitions cost half a day, not a day.

What does the calendar decide, and what does August take away?

May–June and September–October are the two windows, and they are not interchangeable. Lavender on the Valensole plateau colours from mid-June, peaks from the last week of June to about 10 July, and is largely cut by early August — so a June trip that wants lavender is a late-June trip. Riviera beach clubs mostly open in late April and close by the end of September. August is the month to avoid in the capital: many of the best Paris kitchens and ateliers shut for several weeks when the city empties.

What now has to be booked rather than simply bought?

Nearly every major monument in Paris and its region. The Louvre requires a timed slot for every visitor, released exactly 60 days ahead, and closes on Tuesdays. Versailles requires a Palace slot on the Passport ticket — a 30-minute admission window — and closes on Mondays. Sainte-Chapelle works the same way, on 30-minute arrival windows. None of this is privileged access; it is public and finite. What we do is build the day around the slot we can actually secure, rather than promise one nobody can guarantee.

What does France cost beyond the nightly rate?

Budget ~US$1,150 per person, per night, and then the line items the rate does not carry. Paris raised its tourist tax on 1 January 2026: the ceiling for a palace-classified hotel is €15.60 per person, per night, driven by a 200% Île-de-France Mobilités surcharge on top of the municipal amount, with departmental and Grand Paris additions above that. Museum admission moved too — the Louvre charges €32 for non-EEA visitors from January 2026, against €22 for EEA residents. Small sums beside the room, but they are the ones that surprise people at checkout.

Can a private car actually reach the address?

In central Paris, not always by the route you expect. Through-traffic is banned across the first four arrondissements under the Zone à Trafic Limité; enforcement has been deferred and the €135 fine is still held back, but the restriction is real and journeys inside the zone need a purpose. Greater Paris also runs a low-emission zone with sanctions suspended until 31 December 2026. On the coast, Nice, Cannes and Antibes sit inside a Crit'Air perimeter. The class of vehicle you are collected in matters more than it used to.

Who should not book France this way?

Anyone who wants a fixed itinerary confirmed months out and never revisited. France in 2026 runs on release dates: 60 days for the Louvre, mid-June for August on Pampelonne, a year out for the best rail. It is also wrong for travellers who want everything in one stay — Paris at full strength, lavender at its peak and a warm sea do not reliably coexist in the same fortnight.
