Which Alaska are you actually going to?

One or two of its four regions, never four. Alaska is not a destination but four of them, and every change of region costs a flight day. Southeast — the Inside Passage — is temperate rainforest, tidewater ice and living Tlingit coast, travelled by water; Juneau, the capital, has no road to the rest of the continent. South-Central holds Kenai Fjords, reachable from Anchorage by road or by train. The Interior is Denali, four hours north of Anchorage. Southwest is Katmai and the brown bears, two flights out with no road at all. Ten days hold two of those properly. Twelve to fourteen hold three, and only if one of them is a coast you sleep on rather than fly to.

Which month buys what?

Each month of the May–September season trades one thing for another. May is the driest and emptiest, with snow still on the high passes. June has the light — roughly nineteen and a half hours of sun in Anchorage at the solstice — and, for the same reason, no aurora at all: the National Park Service is blunt that June and July are simply too bright for it at Denali. July is the warmest, the salmon are running, and cooperative bubble-net feeding by humpbacks is at its most likely, which Alaska Fish and Game puts in June and July. August is wetter but holds the densest bear activity, and skies darken enough for aurora from about mid-August. September brings colour, quiet and the first snow.

What is closed now, and what reopens in 2027?

The Denali park road, and it reopens next season. Buses run only to mile 43 through summer 2026; the new Pretty Rocks bridge was completed this August and opened to hikers and cyclists on 27 August, but the Park Service states that full bus service along the road resumes in 2027. The Road Lottery is suspended for the foreseeable future. Elsewhere the constraints are quotas rather than closures: every vessel entering Glacier Bay between 1 June and 31 August needs a permit, and the daily ceiling is two cruise ships, three tour vessels, six charter boats and 25 private vessels. Katmai's only roofed lodging is allocated by lottery years ahead.

Does the new US$100 nonresident park fee apply here?

No — not at a single Alaskan park. From 1 January 2026 the National Park Service charges non-US residents aged 16 and over an additional US$100 at eleven parks: Acadia, Bryce Canyon, Everglades, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Sequoia & Kings Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Zion. Alaska is not on that list. If your journey continues to Glacier or Yellowstone, the US$250 nonresident annual pass — which covers the holder and three other adults — is usually the cheaper arithmetic, and we buy it before you travel rather than at a gate.

How much of an Alaskan day can anyone promise?

The itinerary, not the weather. Floatplanes fly on cloud ceiling, boats on swell, and the mountain shows itself when it chooses. What we control is margin: a spare day held in each region, lodges chosen so a grounded morning is still a good morning, and guides who have a second plan before you ask for one. We would rather build ten honest days than twelve that depend on every one of them behaving.

Who should not book Alaska?

Anyone who needs the day to run as printed, and anyone with five days to spend. Alaska punishes short trips: two of those days are flying. It also asks for a tolerance of rain — Ketchikan averages around 150 inches (roughly 3,800 mm) a year — and of plans that change at breakfast. If that reads as adventure rather than as failure, this is the right country. Start with when to go, and we will build the rest around your dates.
