Whether to concentrate in one conservancy or move between two or three ecosystems

For most first-time visitors to Kenya's private conservancies, we recommend two ecosystems over eight days: three nights in the north and four nights in the south, with a scheduled charter flight bridging them. Repeat travelers who already know the Mara almost always choose to go deeper into one lesser-known conservancy rather than cover familiar ground again.
How to do it well
The counsel our advisors give travelers planning this journey:
- Book exclusive-use conservancy permits at least six to nine months ahead for peak dry-season travel in July through October, when bush is thin and predator sightings are most reliable.
- Schedule your fly-camping night mid-safari rather than at the start — guides need two or three drives to read your group's fitness and comfort level before recommending the right site and distance.
- Charter flights between conservancies should be confirmed before any lodge nights are held, as small airstrips in Laikipia and the Chyulu Hills operate on slot systems that fill independently of accommodation availability.
- For the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy specifically, the Lewa Safari Marathon weekend in late June closes airspace and accommodation across the conservancy — plan around it or plan into it, but never ignore it.
