The fastest way between the great safari camps is not a road. A fly-in safari links them by light aircraft — on a shared scheduled flight or a private charter — and turns transfer days into game-drive days.
The Okavango is one of the most photographed wetlands in Africa for a reason: water and light at ground level, predators on open floodplains, and — from the air — patterns you cannot see any other way. This is the trip built around the frame.
Four nights on the water, three on land, two at the Falls — the order that gives the Okavango its full range and ends the trip somewhere that asks nothing of you.
Four nights in Gorongosa, the park that lost most of its wildlife to war and is getting it back, then four on the Bazaruto islands — a Mozambique journey with a story in the first half and the Indian Ocean in the second.
Most luxury camps do same-day laundry, so packing light is easy. The constraint that catches people out is the bag itself: light aircraft will not take a hard case.
Two quotes for the same camps rarely differ on the camps. They differ on the internal flights, which sit inside some rates and outside others.
Off-road driving, night drives and walking are permitted in Kenya's conservancies, Botswana's concessions and Sabi Sand. Tanzania's national parks permit none of the three.
Two half-days disappear into every transfer, so a three-night camp stay is really two days of game viewing — and the best sightings tend to come on day four.
The nightly rate is the easy part. The line most people miss is the park fees, charged per person per day on top of the bed — and they differ more between countries than the camps do.
