Where to Spend Christmas in Luxury: Snow, Sun, Markets or Safari (2026)
Christmas divides into four trips: snow, sun, a city with its markets, or the bush. Where each one works best, what the 2026 calendar says, and, from mid-October, what is still realistic to hold.
- For snow, the resorts open in time: Aspen Mountain and Snowmass on 26 November 2026, St. Moritz's Corviglia and Niseko on 28 November, Courchevel on 4 December.
- For sun, the Caribbean and the Maldives are both in their dry season over Christmas; Punta Cana, Aruba and Barbados hold availability longer than St Barth.
- Not every market is open on Christmas Day: Munich and Nuremberg close on 24 December, Vienna runs to 26 December and Prague's Old Town Square to 6 January 2027.
- A December safari falls in the green season, but rates rise again for the festive fortnight.
- By mid-October the named houses in St Barth and Aspen are usually committed; what remains is a cancellation, a less obvious address or a resort suite.
The short answer
Decide first between snow and sun, because that choice removes half the map. For a winter wonderland Christmas vacation, a staffed chalet in the Alps, a lodge above the Arctic Circle, Aspen or Niseko. For warmth, a villa in the Caribbean or an overwater villa in the Maldives. For a Christmas that feels like Christmas without a house to run, Vienna or Prague and their markets. For a family that has done all of these, a safari. The question that decides how much choice you have is not budget but date: in mid-October 2026 the named houses are mostly committed, and the useful work is knowing what is still holdable.
Snow: the Alps, the Arctic, the Rockies or Japan
A chalet in the Alps
A chalet taken whole, with a chef and a ski host, puts the household under one roof; in Zermatt the village is car-free beneath the Matterhorn. The 2026–27 openings fall before the holidays: St. Moritz's Corviglia on 28 November, Courchevel on 4 December and Verbier on 5 December. Opening means the first lifts, not the whole mountain, and January and February bring the most reliable snow, so a Christmas week is a good bet rather than a certainty. In the Alps Christmas and New Year are let as separate weeks. Resort by resort, see the best luxury ski resorts in the world.
Above the Arctic Circle
Tromsø and Finnish Lapland are the Christmas of huskies, reindeer and the northern lights, and they work best while the children are young enough to be entirely convinced. In Tromsø the sun stays below the horizon from about 27 November to 15 January, according to Visit Tromsø, but the days are not black: the sky brightens around midday, and the long evenings are what make aurora watching possible. See Family in the Snow.
Aspen and the Rockies
Aspen Mountain and Snowmass open on 26 November 2026, with Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk on 12 December, so all four mountains are scheduled to be open by Christmas. It is also the festive week that commits earliest: the Christmas week runs two to three times shoulder rates and the market's own advice is to book it the spring before. Details are in our Aspen and the Rockies guide.
Niseko
Niseko United's lift calendar treats 24 December to 28 February as peak season, which tells you when the powder and the crowds arrive together. All four resorts open on 28 November 2026, night skiing starts on 12 December, and Niseko United notes new direct flights into New Chitose from San Francisco from 11 December and from Vancouver from 17 December. Sun: the Caribbean or the Maldives
Both are in their dry season over Christmas, and both peak from December. The Caribbean is a short flight from the United States and Latin America and sits outside hurricane season, which runs June to November. A staffed villa let by the fortnight carries Christmas and New Year inside one booking, which is the strongest argument for it: one house, no move on the worst travel days. St Barth closes first; Turks & Caicos trades some of its scene for space and calm water; Punta Cana, Aruba and Barbados hold availability longer. What is still holdable is in Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean.
The Maldives is the longer flight and the more secluded answer, with the calmest, driest weeks of the year from December to March. Its finest overwater villas for that window are booked eight to twelve months ahead, so in October the choice is narrower than in spring. The two are weighed side by side in Caribbean vs Maldives.
Cities with Christmas markets
A city Christmas suits a household that wants the season without running a house, and the calendar matters more than people expect, because Munich's and Nuremberg's markets close on Christmas Eve. The 2026 dates, as published by each city:
- Vienna, Rathausplatz: 13 November to 26 December, daily 10:00 to 22:00, closing at 18:30 on 24 December.
- Munich, Marienplatz: 20 November to 24 December, starting earlier than in past years.
- Nuremberg, Hauptmarkt: 27 November to 24 December.
- Prague, Old Town Square: 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, daily 10:00 to 22:00.
For Christmas Day itself, Vienna and Prague are the cities still trading; for Advent, Munich and Nuremberg. To see several markets in one week without repacking, a river cruise between late November and 22 December links the Danube or the Rhine towns, set out in Christmas Markets River Cruise in Europe.
Safari over the holidays
December falls in the green season, November to March, which brings calving, migratory birds and dramatic light. Rates fall through November and early December and rise again for the festive fortnight, so the holiday weeks are not a green-season bargain. From November the herds turn south, and calving in the southern Serengeti runs roughly January to March, which makes a safari that starts after Christmas a strong choice. For a family, South Africa's malaria-free reserves are the usual starting point. A luxury safari starts from US$1,200 per person per night; the camps and seasons are in When to Go on a Luxury African Safari.
How far ahead to book, from mid-October 2026
Plainly: a specific villa or chalet for Christmas is a spring decision, nine to twelve months out, and a full year for St Barth or Aspen. By October the honest answer for those addresses is a waiting list, a cancellation or the January weeks. That is not the same as nothing. Houses slightly off the obvious address, resort suites, Punta Cana and Aruba, the Arctic lodges and the market cities all remain more forgiving, and cancellations move within hours to whoever is asking. Several 2026 Christmas markets sailings were already sold out by early October, so the dates still open are worth holding now.
Plan ten to fourteen nights rather than seven if the house allows it, and avoid flying on 23 and 24 December out or 2 and 3 January home, the hardest travel days of the year. A luxury winter villa or chalet starts from US$2,000 a night, and peak week is a different price, not a premium; the island-by-island figures are in what a holiday-season trip actually costs, and the booking sequence in how to book a villa or ski chalet for Christmas and New Year. If the trip runs on into the 31st, read Where to Spend New Year, and for the whole season, The Holidays. Forest Travel's planning fee is US$250 per itinerary. To begin, speak with an advisor.
Questions, answered.
It depends on whether you want snow or sun. For snow, a staffed chalet in the Alps, Aspen, Niseko or a lodge above the Arctic Circle in Tromsø or Finnish Lapland. For sun, a Caribbean villa let by the fortnight, which carries New Year in the same booking, or the Maldives. For a city Christmas, Vienna or Prague, whose markets stay open past 24 December. For a family that has done all of these, a safari.
Above the Arctic Circle or in the mountains. Tromsø and Finnish Lapland offer huskies, reindeer and the northern lights, with the sun below the horizon in Tromsø from about 27 November to 15 January. In the Alps, St. Moritz's Corviglia opens on 28 November 2026 and Courchevel on 4 December; Aspen and Snowmass open on 26 November. Niseko's peak season begins on 24 December.
The Caribbean and the Maldives, both in their dry season over Christmas. The Caribbean is the short flight from the United States and Latin America, outside hurricane season, which runs June to November; the Maldives is the longer flight, with calm seas and clear water from December to March. In the Caribbean, Punta Cana, Aruba and Barbados hold villa availability longer than St Barth or Turks & Caicos.
In 2026, Vienna's market on the Rathausplatz stays open until 26 December and Prague's on Old Town Square until 6 January 2027, so both are trading over Christmas. Munich and Nuremberg close on Christmas Eve: Munich's on Marienplatz runs from 20 November to 24 December and Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt from 27 November to 24 December. Vienna closes at 18:30 on 24 December.
Not too late, but the named houses are mostly gone. A specific villa or chalet for Christmas is a spring decision, and a full year ahead for St Barth or Aspen, so in mid-October the realistic options are cancellations, houses slightly off the obvious address, resort suites, Punta Cana or Aruba, the Arctic lodges and the market cities. Cancellations move within hours, so a decision ready to be made matters more than budget.
Yes, if you know what you are buying. December is green season, with lush landscapes, migratory birds and newborn animals, but rates rise again for the festive fortnight. A safari that starts just after Christmas reaches the southern Serengeti as the calving season begins, roughly January to March. For families, South Africa's malaria-free reserves are the usual choice. A luxury safari starts from US$1,200 per person per night.
Usually there is skiing, but cover is not guaranteed. The main resorts open before the holidays, St. Moritz's Corviglia on 28 November 2026, Courchevel on 4 December and Verbier on 5 December, yet opening means the first lifts, not the whole mountain. January and February bring the most reliable snow in the Alps. For more certain powder at Christmas, Niseko's peak season begins on 24 December.
Ten to fourteen nights where the house allows it, rather than a Saturday-to-Saturday week. A longer stay absorbs the travel days and avoids flying on 23 and 24 December or 2 and 3 January, the hardest days of the year. In the Caribbean a fortnight also carries New Year in the same booking; in the Alps the two weeks are let separately, so each is held on its own.
