Luxury Skiing in Niseko, Japan (2026–27): Resorts, Powder and When to Go

Four resorts on one mountain in Hokkaido, famous for some of the lightest powder anywhere: when to go in 2026–27, which side of the mountain suits whom, and how the trip fits with the rest of Japan.

Key takeaways
  • Niseko United is four resorts, Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri, on one mountain, Niseko Annupuri (1,308 m), about 100 km south of Sapporo, skied on a single All Mountain Pass.
  • All four open on 28 November 2026; Grand Hirafu and Annupuri run to 5 May 2027, Hanazono to 11 April and Niseko Village to 4 April.
  • The lift calendar treats 24 December to 28 February as peak season; last winter Niseko United recorded 13.5 m of snow, 6.2 m of it in January.
  • Backcountry is entered only through the official gates under the Niseko Rules: helmet, beacon and, ideally, a guide.
  • The usual route is a flight to New Chitose Airport and about two and a half hours by road; Lunar New Year (6 February 2027) and the Sapporo Snow Festival (4–11 February) are the busiest weeks.

The short answer

Niseko is Japan's best-known powder destination: four resorts on one mountain in Hokkaido, skied on a single pass, where winds from the Eurasian continent pick up moisture over the Sea of Japan and, in Niseko United's own words, produce “some of the driest, lightest powder in the world.” For a luxury trip, the decisions are the weeks, the side of the mountain and the guide, and the trip usually pairs the snow with Tokyo or Kyoto.

Four resorts on one mountain

Niseko United is Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri, all on the slopes of Niseko Annupuri, 1,308 metres high and about 100 km south of Sapporo. The All Mountain Pass covers all four, with complimentary transport between them, across more than 2,000 acres of terrain. Grand Hirafu is the largest on its own account, with two gondolas and seven lifts, 22 trails, 940 metres of vertical and a longest run of 5.3 km; Annupuri has natural onsen at its base. Night skiing runs at all four resorts from 12 December 2026 to 22 March 2027, which Niseko United describes as the largest night skiing area in Japan.

When to go in 2026–27

  • Opening: all four resorts on Saturday 28 November 2026. Opening days and hours are subject to change.
  • Early season: 28 November to 11 December, before night skiing starts.
  • Peak season: 24 December 2026 to 28 February 2027 on Niseko United's lift calendar.
  • Spring: from late March; Niseko Village closes on 4 April, Hanazono on 11 April, and Grand Hirafu and Annupuri on 5 May 2027.

For the snow itself, Niseko United expects consistent snowfall from December through March. Last winter it recorded 13.5 metres over the season, 6.2 metres of it in January, with 80 days of fresh snow. January and February are the deepest weeks; they are also the busiest, with Japanese public holidays on 11 January, 11 February and 23 February 2027, Lunar New Year on 6 February and the Sapporo Snow Festival from 4 to 11 February. The dates of every other resort we plan are in the 2026–27 ski season guide.

The backcountry, and the Niseko Rules

Niseko's off-piste is reached only through the official gates, under the Niseko Rules: enter the backcountry through a gate, never duck a rope, wear a helmet and carry a beacon, and stay out when the gates are closed. Elementary-school children need an older companion beyond the gates, search and rescue costs a minimum of ¥100,000, and breaking the rules can cost you your lift pass. The rules exist for a reason: Niseko's own rules page notes that the area once had the highest number of fatal avalanche accidents in Japan. For gate skiing we arrange a private, local guide.

Getting there

The gateway is New Chitose Airport, about a 90-minute flight from Tokyo's Haneda; from there, buses take about two and a half hours to Niseko, and the train runs via Otaru with limited services. From North America, Niseko United notes two new direct routes into New Chitose this winter, from San Francisco from 11 December 2026 and from Vancouver from 17 December 2026. We arrange the private transfer from the airport so that the first day starts on the snow.

How we plan it

We start from the skier: the weeks, the side of the mountain, the guide and the rooms. Private instructors for children and beginners, a backcountry guide for the gates, and the transfer are arranged before arrival, and the snow pairs naturally with the rest of Japan: see our Japan guide, the best time to visit Japan, how many days you need and Japan's luxury trains. Common Questions

Questions, answered.

January and February, for the deepest powder. Niseko United expects consistent snowfall from December through March, and last winter it recorded 13.5 metres of snow over the season, 6.2 metres of it in January. Its lift calendar treats 24 December to 28 February as peak season. Those are also the busiest weeks, with Lunar New Year on 6 February 2027 and the Sapporo Snow Festival from 4 to 11 February.

All four Niseko United resorts open on 28 November 2026. Niseko Village closes on 4 April 2027, Hanazono on 11 April, and Grand Hirafu and Annupuri on 5 May. Night skiing runs at all four from 12 December 2026 to 22 March 2027. Niseko United notes that opening days and hours are subject to change.

All four share one mountain and one pass, so an advanced skier uses the whole of Niseko Annupuri rather than choosing a single resort. Grand Hirafu has the most published vertical, 940 metres, and a longest run of 5.3 km. The real attraction for experts is the backcountry, reached only through the official gates under the Niseko Rules, with helmet, beacon and, ideally, a private local guide.

Yes. Japan's national tourism organisation describes Niseko's resorts as offering family-friendly activities and onsen, and the All Mountain Pass includes complimentary transport between the four resorts. We arrange private instructors for children and beginners. Under the Niseko Rules, elementary-school children may only go beyond the backcountry gates with an older companion.

Fly into New Chitose Airport, about 90 minutes from Tokyo's Haneda, then about two and a half hours by road to Niseko; the train runs via Otaru with limited services. From North America, Niseko United notes new direct flights into New Chitose from San Francisco from 11 December 2026 and from Vancouver from 17 December 2026. We arrange the private transfer from the airport.

Yes, but only through the official backcountry gates, under the Niseko Rules. Never duck a rope, wear a helmet and carry a beacon, and stay out when the gates are closed. Search and rescue costs a minimum of ¥100,000, and breaking the rules can cost you your lift pass. For gate skiing we arrange a private local guide who knows the avalanche information that day.

Night skiing at all four resorts from 12 December to 22 March, which Niseko United describes as the largest night skiing area in Japan; onsen, including natural hot springs at the base of Annupuri and the Niseko Konbu hot spring area, designated a National Health Onsen Resort; and Sapporo's Snow Festival, from 4 to 11 February 2027. Most travellers pair Niseko with Tokyo or Kyoto.
