New Year's Eve on a Yacht: St Barth, Sydney Harbour and What It Takes

Two harbours define New Year's Eve afloat. St Barth is the social one, with the largest gathering of superyachts on record; Sydney is the fireworks, in high summer. What each takes, when the boats are committed, and what a crewed charter starts from.

Key takeaways
  • St Barth drew 226 superyachts on New Year's Eve 2025, averaging 56.82 m and 13 of them over 100 m, according to the broker Northrop & Johnson.
  • On Sydney Harbour on 31 December 2026, exclusion zones are active from 8pm, a 6-knot limit applies from 3pm, and vessels over 15 m are not permitted in Farm Cove.
  • Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean is the single hardest charter window of the year; Northrop & Johnson says yachts are typically secured by June or July.
  • A fully crewed yacht charter starts from around US$50,000 a week, with superyachts considerably more.

The short answer

For New Year's Eve on a yacht, choose St Barth if the evening is about the harbour and the company, and Sydney if it is about the fireworks, in summer. St Barth drew 226 superyachts on New Year's Eve 2025, the largest gathering on record according to the broker Northrop & Johnson; Sydney runs two displays, at 9pm and at midnight, with strict rules for every boat on the harbour. Either way the boat is committed months before the date: Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean is the single hardest charter window of the year.

St Barth: the anchorage everyone is in

Northrop & Johnson counted 226 superyachts off St Barth on New Year's Eve 2025, with an average length of 56.82 m and 13 yachts over 100 m. That is the point and the problem: the harbour is the party, berths are spoken for a year ahead, and the island's villas are let by the fortnight across the turn of the year. A live-aboard week lets you sleep where the anchor drops, in Colombier or off Fourchue, and come into Gustavia for the evening; we recommend at least six nights aboard to feel the rhythm rather than rushing between anchorages. The island itself is in St Barth by yacht.

Sydney: the fireworks, from the water

Sydney runs two displays: the 9pm Calling Country fireworks, presented by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, and a twelve-minute show at midnight off the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. On 31 December 2026, according to Transport for NSW:

  • Exclusion zones are active from 8pm.
  • A 6-knot speed limit applies from 3pm, and a 6-knot, no-wash restriction stays in place until 2am.
  • Vessels over 15 m are not permitted in Farm Cove.
  • Anchored boats must keep at least three times their own length from other vessels.

A boat with a harbour position is the difference between the event and a crowd, and positions are committed months ahead.

When to book

Earlier than for any other week. For peak summer in the Mediterranean, six to twelve months ahead is wise; Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean goes earlier still, and Northrop & Johnson says the yachts are typically secured by June or July, with island reservations finalised by September. What surfaces in the autumn is usually a cancellation.

What it costs, and what sits outside the fee

Indicatively, a fully crewed yacht charter starts from around US$50,000 a week for a smaller motor yacht, rising substantially with size and season, and superyachts are considerably more. The charter fee covers the vessel and its full crew, including a private chef; running costs such as fuel, dockage and provisioning are arranged around you and set out before you sign, and a crew gratuity, commonly around a tenth of the fee, is customary and discretionary. Our planning fee is US$250 per itinerary. The detail is in the private yacht charter guide; for a house instead of a boat, see Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean and how to book a villa for the holidays, and for every other way to spend the night, where to spend New Year. St Barth for the harbour and the company, Sydney for the fireworks in summer. St Barth drew 226 superyachts on New Year's Eve 2025, averaging 56.82 m with 13 over 100 m, the largest gathering on record according to Northrop & Johnson. Sydney runs two displays, the 9pm Calling Country fireworks and a twelve-minute show at midnight, and a boat with a harbour position is the best seat in the city.

On New Year's Eve 2025 there were 226, according to the charter broker Northrop & Johnson, with an average length of 56.82 m and 13 yachts over 100 m, a record that made it the largest gathering of superyachts ever counted. It is why berths are spoken for a year ahead and why the harbour, rather than any single venue, is the event.

Yes, under the harbour rules. On 31 December 2026, Transport for NSW activates exclusion zones from 8pm, applies a 6-knot speed limit from 3pm and a 6-knot, no-wash restriction until 2am, and does not permit vessels over 15 m in Farm Cove. Anchored boats must keep three times their own length from others. A charter with a confirmed harbour position is committed months ahead.

Earlier than for any other week of the year.
