Christmas Markets River Cruise in Europe (2026): Danube or Rhine, Dates and Lines

The easiest way to see several of Europe's great Christmas markets in one trip: which river to choose, when each market opens in 2026, and which lines sail them.

By Juan David· Travel Agent, Forest Travel· Updated October 2026
Key takeaways
  • A river cruise moors close to each old town, with around 200 guests at most and meals, drinks, gratuities and excursions usually in the fare: the simplest way to see several markets in one week.
  • The Danube is the Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau, Vienna and Budapest route; the Rhine is the Basel, Strasbourg and Cologne route.
  • In 2026 Vienna and Budapest open on 13 November, Cologne's cathedral market on 16 November, Basel on 26 November and Nuremberg on 27 November; most close between 22 and 24 December.
  • All seven river lines we book through Virtuoso sell Christmas markets sailings for 2026, most of them 7 or 8 days between late November and just before Christmas.
  • Several 2026 festive departures were already sold out by early October, so the dates still open are worth holding now.

The short answer

A Christmas markets river cruise is the easiest way to see several of Europe's great markets in a single trip. The ship moors within walking distance of the old town, sails on overnight and reaches the next market by morning; a luxury river ship carries around 200 guests at most, and meals, drinks, gratuities and shore excursions are usually included in the fare. The choice that shapes the week is the river: the Danube for Vienna, Budapest and the Bavarian towns, or the Rhine for Basel, Strasbourg and Cologne.

Danube or Rhine: which markets each river reaches

The Danube is the classic Christmas route. Sailings typically run between Nuremberg or Passau and Vienna or Budapest, stopping at Regensburg and Passau on the way, so a single week links Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt, Vienna's market on the Rathausplatz and the Vörösmarty Square fair in Budapest.

The Rhine runs between Basel and Amsterdam, with Strasbourg and Cologne, whose cathedral market sits beside the Dom. It suits travellers who want the French-German border towns, and a market that, by Strasbourg's own account, was born in 1570.

Some lines also sail the Main, between Nuremberg and Frankfurt, and a few link the Rhine, the Main and the Danube in a single, longer voyage.

When each market is open in 2026

Each city sets its own dates. These are the ones published on the markets' official sites:

  • Vienna, Wiener Christkindlmarkt on the Rathausplatz: 13 November to 26 December 2026, daily 10:00–22:00, and until 18:30 on 24 December.
  • Budapest, Vörösmarty Square: from 13 November 2026, with shorter hours on 24, 25 and 26 December.
  • Cologne, the cathedral market on Roncalliplatz: 16 November to 23 December 2026, closed on Sunday 22 November.
  • Regensburg, Neupfarrplatz: planned for 23 November to 23 December 2026.
  • Passau, Domplatz: 24 November to 22 December 2026.
  • Basel, Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz: 26 November to 23 December 2026, daily 11:00–20:30.
  • Nuremberg, Christkindlesmarkt on the Hauptmarkt: 27 November to 24 December 2026, daily 10:00–21:00, opening on 27 November and closing at 14:00 on 24 December.
  • Strasbourg, Christkindelsmärik: 2026 dates not yet published by the city at the time of writing.

The practical consequence: a sailing from the end of November reaches every market, and a December sailing should finish by 22 December, when Passau closes.

Which river lines sail the Christmas markets

All seven river lines available through our Virtuoso partnership sell Christmas markets sailings for 2026: AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Riverside Luxury Cruises, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld and Viking. Most run 7 or 8 days, departing between late November and just before Christmas; some lines also sell shorter four- and five-day sailings, and a few longer voyages link the Rhine, Main and Danube. By early October 2026 several festive departures were already sold out, so the dates still open are worth holding now.

How your advisor plans it

Start with the river, then the dates, then the line and the suite. The river decides the markets; the dates decide which of them are open; and the line decides the feel on board. Many of the amenities attached to these sailings are only available when you book through a Virtuoso travel advisor. Common Questions

Questions, answered.

On the Danube, Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt, Vienna's market on the Rathausplatz and Budapest's Vörösmarty Square fair, with Regensburg and Passau between them. On the Rhine, Basel, Strasbourg, whose market the city dates to 1570, and Cologne's cathedral market. A one-week Danube sailing between Nuremberg and Budapest links the three best-known in a single trip. Which is best depends on the river you choose, not on a ranking.

Vienna and Budapest open on 13 November 2026, Cologne's cathedral market on 16 November, Regensburg on 23 November (planned), Passau on 24 November, Basel on 26 November and Nuremberg on 27 November. Most close between 22 and 24 December, and Vienna stays open until 26 December. Strasbourg had not published its 2026 dates at the time of writing.

The Danube for Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau, Vienna and Budapest: the classic Christmas route. The Rhine for Basel, Strasbourg and Cologne, and the French-German border towns between them. Both usually take about a week, and a few longer voyages link the Rhine, the Main and the Danube for travellers who want both.

All seven river lines available through Forest Travel's Virtuoso partnership sell Christmas markets sailings for 2026: AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Riverside Luxury Cruises, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld and Viking. They differ in ship, route and what is included, so your advisor compares them line by line. By early October 2026 several departures were already sold out.

Most are 7 or 8 days, departing between late November and just before Christmas. Some lines also sell four- and five-day sailings, and a few longer voyages link the Rhine, the Main and the Danube in about two weeks. A week on one river is enough for three or four markets, with the ship moving between them overnight.

Most luxury river cruises include meals, drinks, gratuities and shore excursions in the base fare, so the quoted price is close to what you pay. What varies by line is the rest: flights, hotel nights before and after the cruise, and specialty experiences. Many of the amenities on these sailings are only available when you book through a Virtuoso travel advisor.

In 2026, a departure from the end of November reaches every market: Nuremberg, the last of the big ones to open, starts on Friday 27 November, the day after Thanksgiving. Finish by 22 December, when Passau closes; Cologne and Basel close on the 23rd, and Nuremberg at 14:00 on Christmas Eve. Vienna stays open until 26 December.
