The Best Luxury River Cruise Lines Compared (2026–27): Which Line Suits Whom
Seven river lines sail Europe's great rivers at the luxury end, and they are not interchangeable. What each one is known for, the ships, the rivers, what the fare actually includes, and who each line suits.
- Scenic, Tauck and Uniworld include gratuities and premium drinks in the fare; AmaWaterways and Viking include wine and beer with lunch and dinner, with premium drinks extra.
- Riverside and Scenic assign butler service to every suite; Uniworld offers butler service to its suite guests.
- Ship size differs: AmaWaterways averages 156 guests per ship, and Viking's Longships carry 190.
- Every one of the seven sails the Danube and the Rhine; only some reach the Douro, the Nile or the Mekong.
- Fares move by sailing, suite and season, so your advisor quotes by departure rather than from a brochure figure.
The short answer
There is no single best luxury river cruise line; there is a best line for the way you travel. If you want everything in the fare, including gratuities and premium drinks, look first at Scenic, Tauck and Uniworld. If you want a butler for every suite, Scenic and Riverside Luxury Cruises. If you want space and design on the Danube, AmaWaterways and Riverside. If you want a fully guided trip where nothing is sold on board, Tauck. If you want the widest map, from the Elbe to the Mississippi, Viking. Avalon Waterways is the line built around the view from the suite. The river comes first, then the line, then the suite.

What each line is known for
AmaWaterways
AmaWaterways says it introduced complimentary bicycles on board in 2006 and twin-balcony staterooms in 2010, and its ships average 156 guests. It introduced the Chef's Table, which it calls the first specialty restaurant of its kind on the rivers, and a host-led wellness programme runs on its European and Mekong ships. On the Danube, AmaMagna is twice the width of a traditional European river ship, with suites from 355 to 710 sq ft. The fare includes meals, wine and beer with lunch and dinner, a Sip & Sail cocktail hour in Europe, Wi-Fi and excursions; premium drinks and gratuities are extra.
Avalon Waterways
Avalon builds its Suite Ships around the view. Its Panorama Suites measure 200 sq ft, their wall-to-wall windows open into what Avalon calls an Open-Air Balcony, and the beds face the river rather than a wall. Wine, beer and soft drinks are included with lunch and dinner, along with an average of 22 included excursions, bikes and e-bikes, and Wi-Fi. On the Douro, the Avalon Alegria carries 102 guests.
Riverside Luxury Cruises
All-suite ships on the Danube, Rhine, Main, Rhône and Saône. The smallest suite on the Riverside Mozart measures 20 m² (215 sq ft), and every guest has a butler who will unpack, arrange pressing and book restaurants ashore. Gratuities are included; drinks and excursions depend on the package booked, from full board to a premium all-inclusive tier.
Scenic
Scenic publishes one of the fullest inclusion lists of the seven: butler service for every suite, up to five dining experiences in Europe, premium drinks all day and a mini-bar restocked daily, Scenic Freechoice excursions, e-bikes in Europe, and all tipping on board and ashore. Airport transfers are included in Europe and Asia when flights and hotel nights are booked with Scenic. A small number of fine wines and wellness services carry a charge.
Tauck
Tauck runs its sailings as fully guided journeys. Every shore excursion, all gratuities (crew, local guides, drivers and Tauck Directors), drinks including premium spirits, and arrival and departure transfers are in one upfront price, and, in Tauck's words, no options are sold. It also runs family river cruises on the Danube and the Rhine, and from late 2026 a six-day format, mainly in spring and autumn.
Uniworld
Uniworld describes its ships as floating boutique hotels: each is designed around the river it sails, with original artwork and antiques. Unlimited drinks, including fine wines and premium spirits, gratuities for all onboard staff, excursions, Wi-Fi and scheduled airport transfers are included; suite guests add butler service. Inclusions vary in Egypt, India, Southeast Asia and Peru.
Viking
Viking's Longships carry 190 guests on the Danube, Rhine, Main, Seine, Rhône, Douro and Elbe, with sister ships on the Nile, the Mekong and the Mississippi. One excursion in every port is included, as are beer and wine with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi and enrichment lectures; spirits are sold as a daily package. Transfers are included when flights are bought from Viking.
Which line suits whom
- Nothing to sign for: Scenic, Tauck or Uniworld, where drinks and gratuities sit inside the fare.
- A butler and a suite: Scenic or Riverside, or a suite category on Uniworld.
- Space on the Danube: AmaWaterways' AmaMagna or the Riverside Mozart.
- A family with children: Tauck's family sailings on the Danube and the Rhine.
- Active days ashore: AmaWaterways or Scenic, with bicycles and e-bikes on board and guided rides.
- Wine with meals rather than an open bar: AmaWaterways, Avalon or Viking, where premium drinks sit outside the base fare.
Which river, and when
The Danube and the Rhine are the core, and in the 2026 Virtuoso Luxe Report they rank fourth and ninth among all cruising itineraries of the year. From late November both become the Christmas markets route: in 2026 Vienna opens on 13 November and Nuremberg on 27 November, and Passau closes on 22 December, so a sailing from the end of November reaches every market. The dates and lines are in Christmas Markets River Cruise in Europe; Uniworld and Viking also sell festive sailings on the Seine.
The Douro is for wine country: the harvest runs September to October, and AmaWaterways, Avalon, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld and Viking all sail it. More on timing the valley is in our luxury Portugal guide. The Nile, sailed by AmaWaterways, Uniworld and Viking, is at its most comfortable from October to April, as set out in the best time to visit Egypt. On the Mekong, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Scenic, Uniworld and Viking all operate; your advisor times it to the water.
Water levels are the variable no brochure shows. In October 2026 Uniworld posted a notice of unusually low water on sections of the Rhine, Main and Danube, and AmaWaterways describes its contingencies as alternative docking, modified excursions or ship swaps. Late-season sailings are worth booking with that in mind.
How your advisor books it
We start with the river and the month, then match the line to how you travel, then choose the suite. Fares change by sailing, suite and season, so we quote by departure rather than publish a single figure; Forest Travel's planning fee is US$250 per itinerary. Questions, answered.
The seven luxury river lines Forest Travel compares are AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Riverside Luxury Cruises, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld and Viking. None is best at everything: Scenic, Tauck and Uniworld include the most in the fare, Riverside and Scenic give every suite a butler, AmaWaterways is known for twin balconies and wellness, Avalon for suites facing the river, and Viking for the widest map. The right line depends on the river and on how you travel.
Among these seven, Scenic, Tauck and Uniworld publish the fullest inclusions. All three include premium drinks, gratuities and excursions; Scenic adds butler service for every suite, and Tauck states that no options are sold. AmaWaterways and Viking include wine and beer with lunch and dinner, but premium drinks are extra, and AmaWaterways suggests gratuities separately. Riverside's inclusions depend on the package booked.
Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld and Riverside Luxury Cruises include gratuities in the fare. Scenic covers all tipping on board and ashore; Tauck covers crew, local guides, drivers and Tauck Directors; Uniworld covers all onboard staff; and Riverside includes them in every package. AmaWaterways suggests gratuities separately, and Avalon and Viking do not list them among their published inclusions, so your advisor confirms them per sailing.
Scenic and Riverside Luxury Cruises provide butler service for every suite. Riverside's butlers unpack and pack, arrange laundry and pressing, serve meals in the suite and book restaurants and excursions ashore. Uniworld offers butler service to guests in its suite categories.
Tauck, which runs dedicated family river cruises on the Danube and the Rhine and, like all its sailings, every excursion and gratuity included. For older children who cycle, AmaWaterways and Scenic carry bicycles or e-bikes on board for guided rides ashore. Your advisor checks age rules and connecting staterooms per ship before anything is held.
AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld and Viking all sail Portugal's Douro; Riverside Luxury Cruises does not. Avalon's Douro ship, the Avalon Alegria, carries 102 guests. The valley is at its best from May to early October, and the harvest runs September to October, which is when the quintas are at their busiest and most worth arranging privately.
On the Nile, AmaWaterways, Uniworld and Viking. On the Mekong, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Scenic, Uniworld and Viking. The Nile is most comfortable from October to April, with November to February the coolest months. Uniworld notes that its inclusions vary in Egypt and Southeast Asia, so the fare is read line by line before two sailings are compared.
It depends on the line, the suite, the river and the departure, so we quote by sailing rather than publish one figure. What moves the price most is what the fare includes: a line that folds in premium drinks, gratuities and transfers can cost more upfront and less in total. Your advisor compares two quotes line by line before you choose, and Forest Travel's planning fee is US$250 per itinerary.
