Whether to base in one place or move between two distinct parts of the island

Staying entirely in the Etna wine country gives the harvest immersion real depth — you return each evening to the same cellar, the same terrace, and the relationship with the place compounds. Splitting the journey, typically four nights on Etna and three in the Val di Noto or the Palermo coast, adds baroque architecture and a different culinary tradition but requires a road transfer of roughly two and a half hours. We generally recommend the split for first-time visitors and the single base for those returning who already know the island's breadth.

• Fly into Catania rather than Palermo if the Etna wine country anchors your stay; the drive to the eastern slopes is under an hour, and Catania's Fontanarossa has direct connections from most major European hubs.
• The Taormina Film Festival ends in June, but the Teatro Antico hosts concerts through September — ask your advisor about a private evening performance, as tickets require advance arrangement and sell quickly.
• Pack a light layer for Etna evenings: even in late September the altitude above 600 metres drops noticeably after sunset, and harvest dinners outdoors on the mountain run late into the night.
