Whether to base in Lecce or stay closer to the water in Gallipoli or Otranto
Lecce gives you the finest baroque architecture in southern Italy and excellent dining, but it sits forty minutes from the coast — a daily transfer that adds up. Gallipoli and Otranto both place you within walking distance of the port each morning, with their own distinct characters: Gallipoli is livelier and faces west for sunset, Otranto is quieter and faces Albania across an open crossing that feels genuinely remote. For a journey centred on sea days, we generally anchor clients in one of the coastal towns and plan a single dedicated half-day excursion into Lecce, which is exactly the right amount.
How to do it well
The counsel our advisors give travelers planning this journey:
- Book your private skipper and boat from early January for July and August departures — quality vessels with licensed bilingual skippers on the Salento coast are genuinely limited and the best ones are reserved by February.
- The clearest water and calmest seas run from mid-June through mid-September; late September offers nearly identical conditions with noticeably fewer boats in the coves and lower pressure on the finest luxury hotels in Gallipoli and Otranto.
- Raw ricci di mare — sea urchin — is at its peak from October through April, but a good fish market contact can source it in summer; ask us to arrange a portside tasting before your first sail day.
- Italian coastal entry for private vessels involves specific documentation; if you plan to charter rather than bring a private yacht, confirm the operator's charter licence and insurance paperwork at least six weeks before departure to avoid port authority delays.
