A single Valle d'Itria base offers depth — you are twenty minutes from Alberobello, Locorotondo and Cisternino, and the coast is never more than forty minutes away. Splitting the journey to include a Salento property near Otranto or Gallipoli adds the dramatically different heel-of-the-boot character: Baroque Lecce, the Adriatic versus Ionian contrast, and a quieter, less-visited stretch of coast. We typically recommend the split for travelers staying ten nights or more; for seven nights, a single anchor in the Valle d'Itria with curated day excursions captures more without the friction of moving bags mid-trip.
How to do it well

- Book the finest luxury hotels in the Valle d'Itria and Salento no later than January for July and August arrivals — the best masserie and trulli compounds release their peak-season inventory early and operate at full occupancy from late June.
- The Ostuni and Fasano farmers' markets are most rewarding on weekday mornings in July, before the seasonal influx peaks in the first two weeks of August when Puglia sees its highest domestic visitor numbers.
- Arrange private transfers in advance; the roads between Monopoli, Alberobello and Lecce are straightforward but rental-car logistics add friction — a dedicated driver for day excursions costs a fraction of the convenience it buys.
- If your itinerary includes Lecce, plan at least one evening dinner reservation at one of the city's celebrated restaurants well ahead — tables at the most sought-after addresses in the historic centre book out six to eight weeks in advance in summer.
