Few countries reward the discerning traveler as generously as Italy, where art, coastline and the pleasures of the table meet at every turn.

When to go
May through June and September into October, when the light is golden, the crowds thin and the tables at the finest establishments open to those who know to ask. Your advisor times it to the light, the crowds and your own calendar.
The experiences
A sense of what this journey can hold — each one arranged privately and shaped to you:
- A private dawn rowing excursion on the lake, arranged before other guests stir, when the Grigne massif catches the first alpine light and the water holds a perfect stillness.
- Bespoke spa programming at the finest luxury hotels on the western Tremezzina shore, where treatments draw on local botanicals — larch, juniper, lake mud — curated around your personal wellness intentions.
- A slow lunch at Ristorante Imperialino in Moltrasio or Locanda dell'Isola Comacina on the island, reached by private launch, with no itinerary beyond the afternoon light.
- A guided walk through the terraced gardens of the Larian hillside villages — Varenna, Bellagio, Lenno — with a botanist who explains the camellias, wisterias and century-old olive groves that define this microclimate.
A sense of the rhythm
Days here move at the pace of the water — unhurried, shaped by light rather than the clock. Mornings belong to the lake and the spa; afternoons open into slow village wandering or simply a terrace, a book and the view across to the Bellagio promontory. By evening the hills darken quickly and dinner feels like the natural close of something genuinely restful.
Whether to base on the western shore near Tremezzo or the eastern shore near Varenna
Tremezzo and the Tremezzina riviera offer the grandest lakefront hotels, the most established spa facilities and easy ferry access to Bellagio — it is the classic choice for a wellness-first stay. Varenna, on the eastern shore, is quieter, less trafficked and beloved by travelers who want the lake without any trace of a crowd, though its luxury accommodation is more limited. We typically recommend the western shore for a five-night stay and build in a private boat crossing to Varenna for an afternoon, giving you both worlds. The decision usually comes down to how much total seclusion you want versus access to the lake's full social and culinary geography.
How to do it well
The counsel our advisors give travelers planning this journey:
- Book for May or early October — the lake is at its most luminous, the gardens are at peak bloom or autumn colour, and the Tremezzina promenade is walkable without summer crowds.
- Spa suites at the finest luxury hotels on the western shore book out four to six months ahead for the May and September peaks; contact us no later than January for a spring journey.
- Private boat hire for morning excursions and inter-village crossings should be arranged before departure — the best skippers are engaged weeks in advance, particularly on weekends in June.
- If you are considering adding a Como silk atelier visit — the city of Como produces eighty percent of Europe's silk — we build that into an afternoon transfer on the day of arrival or departure, keeping it outside the wellness rhythm of the stay.
What only your advisor can open
The difference between a good trip and an unrepeatable one is access — and access is a relationship, not a booking. Every guide, room and moment is chosen and sequenced for you.
Who it's for
Travelers who value privacy, time and doing it once — beautifully — and who would rather have one trusted advisor orchestrate every detail than assemble it themselves.
Estimated investment
From US$9,800 per traveler, based on double occupancy — scaled to your dates, party size and level of privacy. A starting point, not a final quote; confirmed once your advisor tailors the itinerary.
Designed entirely around you
Nothing here is a package. A Forest Travel advisor shapes the whole journey and stays one message away before and throughout your trip.
