May, June and September are the prime months, with gardens in full bloom in late spring and warm, settled weather without August's congestion. July and August are busy and the lakeside roads slow considerably, while many of the grand hotels and villa gardens close from late October until Easter. Spring is best for the camellias and azaleas at the villa gardens of Tremezzo and Bellagio.

A classic wooden Riva or a chartered launch with a pilot is the signature way to experience Como, gliding past the villas of Tremezzina, the gardens of Villa del Balbianello at Lenno, and the promontory of Bellagio. The central lake around Bellagio, Tremezzo and Lenno is the most scenic and best served by the leading lakeside hotels, while Como town anchors the southwestern arm and is closest to Milan. Three nights is comfortable for a relaxed stay; many travelers use Como as a serene counterpoint of two or three nights bookending a city or Alpine itinerary.
Como sits less than an hour from Milan, making it an easy pairing with the city's fashion and the Last Supper. The lakeside roads are narrow and frequently congested, so boat transfers are often faster and more pleasant than driving between towns. Villa del Balbianello and the major villa gardens require timed reservations and limit large groups, and the most sought-after lakeside restaurants and hotel terraces book up months ahead for summer; your advisor can coordinate private water transfers and reservations together.
Villa del Balbianello at Lenno is a FAI property with compulsory online reservation, closed on non-holiday Mondays and on Wednesdays, which are given to weddings. In 2026 it opened weekends from 14 to 28 February, then daily from 14 March, 10:00 to 18:00. The interiors are seen only on a guided tour in fixed 45-minute slots, around €25 and best held weeks out; park-only entry runs about €15.
Varenna wrote a dress code into its municipal police regulations, approved on 26 June 2026 and in force from 29 June. Swimwear is confined to beaches, piers and boat docks; elsewhere in the municipality, being shirtless or in swimwear alone carries a fine of €50 to €200. The same revision caps tour groups at 25 people, bars them from blocking streets and squares, and prohibits guides from using loudspeakers.
