Why three nights in a camp is the floor
Two half-days disappear into every transfer, so a three-night stay is really two full days of game viewing. Add that the guiding improves as the guide learns what you actually want — the leopard, the birds, the light for the camera — and the fourth morning is usually the one people remember. A five-night trip split across two camps is four half-days of driving and very little else.
What lengthens a safari, legitimately
- A second country. Ten to twelve nights, and worth it only when the second is genuinely different — see which country.
- The migration. Following it rather than meeting it in one place needs the extra nights, because the river crossings are a matter of days, not weeks.
- Gorillas. A trek in Rwanda pairs with a savannah country rather than replacing one, and the permit is a fixed daily place, so it anchors the dates.
- The coast. Three or four nights of beach after four or five nights of early starts is the pattern that works.
Book the nights before you book the flights
Ten to twelve months ahead for July to October, and for any exclusive-use camp or a family needing adjoining tents. The best camps in the Mara conservancies and the migration mobile camps in the Serengeti hold very few rooms — often eight to twenty guests in total — so peak dates go early. Gorilla permits are capped daily and should be secured first, before flights.
