The short answer

Choose Whistler for scale and a car-free base: one resort on two mountains, which Whistler Blackcomb describes as the largest ski resort in North America, around a pedestrian village where children can walk to ski school. Choose Aspen for a choice of mountains around a town: Snowmass for families, Buttermilk for beginners, and Aspen Mountain and Highlands for the stronger skiers in the party, with Aspen's airport 3 miles from downtown. Both do family skiing at the highest level; the difference is the shape of the holiday.

The mountains

Whistler Blackcomb has 8,171 acres, more than 200 marked runs, 16 alpine bowls, three glaciers and 36 lifts. The Peak 2 Peak Gondola links the two mountains in about 11 minutes, 436 metres above the valley floor, with an unsupported span of 3.024 km.

Aspen Snowmass spreads more than 5,700 acres across four mountains. Snowmass alone has more than 3,300 acres, larger than the other three combined, and Aspen Snowmass calls it especially well suited for families, with 95% of its lodging ski-in, ski-out. Buttermilk is the beginners' and families' mountain, with a free chairlift at the base for first-timers; Aspen Mountain and Aspen Highlands are where the experts go.

Children and teenagers

At Whistler Blackcomb, group lessons are organised by age: 3 to 4, 5 to 6 and 7 to 12, and teen lessons for 13 to 18. At Aspen Snowmass, kids' lessons run from age two and a half to 17, children six and under ski free, and the Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center at Snowmass is licensed childcare for ages one to four. For a family with teenagers who ski at different levels, we add private instructors so everyone can meet for lunch.

When to go in 2026–27

Whistler Blackcomb targets 20 November 2026 for opening, and Tourism Whistler describes its season as typically late November into May. Aspen Mountain and Snowmass open on Thanksgiving Day, 26 November 2026, with Highlands and Buttermilk following on 12 December; Aspen Mountain is scheduled to close on 18 April 2027. The busiest weeks in both are Thanksgiving, Christmas to New Year, Martin Luther King weekend in January and Presidents' Day in February; Whistler suggests pre-Christmas as a quieter time to visit. Every resort's dates are in the 2026–27 ski season guide.

Getting there

Whistler is 120 km from Vancouver along the Sea to Sky Highway, about a two-hour drive, or about 30 minutes by helicopter, weather permitting. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is 3 miles from downtown Aspen and 6 miles from Snowmass Village, and Eagle County Airport is about 70 miles away. We arrange the private transfer either way.

How we plan it

We start from the ages and abilities in the family, then the weeks, then the home at the base. In the Rockies, a catered luxury chalet starts from around US$2,000 per night, and the finest book up to a year ahead for the holidays.
