A sense of the rhythm
Days open at anchor in silence, with the crew handling breakfast before any destination is committed to — the itinerary is a suggestion, adjusted by wind and tide. Whether to base in Porto Cervo or keep the yacht moving throughout
Porto Cervo and the Costa Smeralda offer excellent provisioning, superyacht berths and the social energy of the Aga Khan's original resort vision, and some travelers prefer to anchor there for two nights mid-voyage. A fully mobile itinerary, however, reaches the anchorages that disappear by noon — the uninhabited faces of Spargi, Budelli's pink-sand shore, the channels only a vessel drawing under two metres can enter. How to do it well
The counsel our advisors give travelers planning this journey:
- Charter vessels of the right size and crew quality for the Maddalena waters book twelve to eighteen months ahead for June, July and August — contact us before October if you want a specific departure window in peak season.
- Late May and mid-September offer the same water clarity as July with significantly fewer vessels in the national park anchorages; the Mistral wind is also more predictable in shoulder season for planning the Bonifacio crossing.
- A cruising permit for the Maddalena Archipelago National Park must be arranged before departure; Forest Travel coordinates this with the charter broker so the vessel is cleared before it leaves the dock at Palau or Olbia.
- If you plan to dine at one of the landmark Costa Smeralda restaurants — Cala di Volpe's beach club or Gianni Pedrinelli in Porto Cervo — reserve from shore at least three weeks out in July and August, as tables do not hold for walk-ins arriving by tender.
