Splitting the stay to include two nights in Naples or Sorrento gives older children the contrast of a working Italian city and a more comfortable gateway to Pompeii. For families with children under ten, we almost always recommend staying put: the travel logistics on these narrow roads cost more than they give back. For teenagers, the split works beautifully.
How to do it well

- Book your villa by January for July and August arrivals — the best properties above Positano and Praiano are held by returning families and release only a handful of weeks each year.
- Reserve the private Pompeii archaeologist at least three months in advance; the handful of licensed guides who work at that level are booked by educational groups and private clients simultaneously.
- Schedule boat excursions to Capri for Tuesday through Thursday — weekend ferry traffic from Naples makes the marina and the Blue Grotto significantly more crowded from Friday afternoon onward.
