Trips You Should Plan at Least a Year in Advance (And Why)

Table of Contents

There’s a certain type of trip that doesn’t come together last minute.
Not because it’s complicated — but because the best version of it is limited. Limited in availability, in timing, in access.
And by the time most people start planning, it’s already too late.

Safari is one of the clearest examples. Places like the Okavango Delta in Botswana or the Serengeti operate on a different timeline. The most sought-after lodges are small by design, often with just a handful of suites, and availability is built around very specific seasons — the migration, the flooding patterns, the wildlife movements that define the entire experience.
It’s not just about securing a room. It’s about securing the right moment.

The same applies to travel during the festive season. December, and especially the weeks around Christmas and New Year’s, remain some of the most competitive dates of the year. The most in-demand hotels — whether in the Caribbean, the Alps, or private island resorts — are often confirmed months in advance, sometimes before plans are even finalized. At that point, it’s not a question of preference.
It’s a question of what’s still available.

Japan during cherry blossom season follows a similar pattern. The window is short, the demand is global, and the timing shifts slightly every year. What makes the experience special — the brief moment when everything is in bloom is also what makes it difficult to access. And without early planning, it becomes less about experiencing it well, and more about simply being there.

Then there are destinations that don’t rely on seasons, but on scarcity. Properties like Amangiri, or highly sought-after resorts across the Maldives, operate with limited inventory and consistent demand. The difference between planning early and planning late isn’t just availability, it’s access to the rooms, the views, the level of privacy that defines the stay. The experience changes depending on what you’re able to secure.

Summer in Europe sits somewhere in between. Destinations like the Amalfi Coast, the South of France, or the Greek islands don’t necessarily require a year of planning to visit — but they do if you want them done properly. The right hotel, in the right location, at the right time, without compromise. Otherwise, you’re left adjusting the trip around what’s left, rather than what you actually wanted.

And then there are the trips built around events. Formula 1 races, major cultural festivals, global sporting events, moments that bring together a specific place and a specific time. These are often confirmed far in advance, not because they need to be, but because the demand around them builds quickly and consistently.
Waiting doesn’t make them more flexible. It makes them harder to access.

Planning early isn’t about being rigid. It’s about creating options. Because the difference between a good trip and the right trip often comes down to timing — not just when you go, but when you start.
And in luxury travel, access is rarely about luck but about knowing when to move.
