The east coast faces the open Atlantic — dramatic, wind-blown and genuinely not for swimming. The south is livelier and better suited to travellers who want more around them.
December through April is the dry season: reliable sun, steady trade winds and the calmest water on the west coast. The summer and autumn months are quieter and far better value, with more heat and more rain. Barbados sits at the eastern edge of the region, which historically leaves it less exposed than the islands further inside the chain — less exposed, not exempt.
Because it has the eastern Caribbean's best long-haul connectivity, with direct service from the UK, North America and regional hubs into a full-size international airport. That matters more than it sounds: on most islands the connecting leg is the hard part, and here there usually is not one.
Barbados supports both properly, which is unusual. The west coast has a genuine villa culture — staffed houses with a chef and a housekeeper — alongside long-established hotels. Families and larger parties tend towards the houses; couples split evenly.
Barbados is larger, more lived-in and more self-sufficient — an island with its own life rather than a resort economy. St Barth is smaller, more social and harder to secure; Turks & Caicos is flatter, quieter and built around one extraordinary beach. Barbados is the one that holds availability longest.
