Common Questions

Questions, answered.

North Malé Atoll resorts are 20 to 45 minutes from the airport by speedboat, and the boats run around the clock. Velana International sits inside North Malé, so it is the only atoll you can reach at any hour. Land at midnight and you are in the villa by one, with no airport hotel and no lost morning. On a five- or six-night trip, that returns most of a day at each end.

For North Malé Atoll, the speedboat is usually faster. A seaplane makes sense only if the island is genuinely served by one and your flight lands early. Seaplanes fly visually in daylight, check-in for the last rotations closes around 15:30, and baggage rules are tighter than on a jet. The view is extraordinary, but here it buys nothing a speedboat cannot do faster, so the seaplane is better kept for Baa Atoll.

In North Malé Atoll, choose overwater if it is two of you and the water is the point; choose a beach villa if there are children or you want shade after two o'clock. The walkway villas sit over shallow, luminous sand, but they run hot and several islands set a minimum age. Beach villas put you under palms with a door onto the sand.

Some are, but North Malé Atoll is the busiest atoll in the Maldives, and the traffic can cost clarity on some days and solitude on the reef. Its channels carry resort boats, ferries and cargo, and decades of use have reworked some house reefs. Forest Travel checks coral cover, the drop-off and whether the current crosses the swimming line before recommending an island, and sends divers to the outer channels.

During the northeast monsoon, the western rim of North Malé Atoll is where mantas feed, because the current pushes plankton there and the water looks greener; the eastern side keeps the clearer visibility. From December to March, a house reef facing east with a dive boat heading west is usually the right combination. From June onward the pattern reverses. Travellers whose real goal is the manta aggregation are better served in Baa Atoll.

The best time to visit North Malé Atoll is the dry window from November to April, and within it the side of the atoll matters. During the northeast monsoon, mantas feed on the western rim, where the water is greener, while the eastern side keeps the clearer visibility. From December to March, a house reef facing east and a dive boat heading west is usually the right combination. From June onward the pattern reverses.

North Malé Atoll journeys typically run 6 to 7 days: the Overwater Escape and the Family Island are 7 days, the Diving Atoll 6 days. Because speedboats from Velana International run around the clock, even a five- or six-night trip gains back most of a day at each end. With ten nights, Forest Travel often starts in North Malé to recover from the flight, then moves on to another atoll.

Yes. In North Malé Atoll, Forest Travel chooses the island with the right reef, the right villa, and the chef who will set a table on a private sandbank for two. Before recommending an island, advisors check the house reef itself: coral cover, the drop-off and whether the current crosses the swimming line. Divers go to the outer channels with a private dive guide, and families or couples are matched to beach or overwater villas.

Our Maldives trips are estimated from around US$1,950 per person per night across the country and from around US$2,100 in North Malé Atoll, so a six-night stay here runs from around US$12,600 per person, plus our US$250 planning fee per itinerary. Each bill also carries the green tax of US$12 per person per night, 17% TGST and, on most islands, 10% service, applied to rooms, meals, excursions and transfers alike.

Those in North Malé Atoll, because Velana International sits inside it: every island here is a speedboat away, 20 to 45 minutes, with transfers running around the clock. Land at midnight and you can be in your villa by one, with no airport hotel and no morning lost. Seaplane atolls such as Baa close their last check-in around 15:30, which is why North Malé suits short trips and late arrivals.

It depends on the trip. North Malé is the right atoll for short stays and late arrivals, since every island is 20 to 45 minutes from Velana by speedboat. Baa is the atoll for the manta aggregation at Hanifaru Bay from June to November. The southern atolls suit divers and repeat visitors who want reefs without boat traffic, reached by a domestic flight. On ten-night trips we often start in North Malé and move on.
