Whether to base entirely in Rome or add a day excursion to the Castelli Romani or Orvieto

Rome itself rewards six full days without question — the Aventine Hill, the Protestant Cemetery, the lesser-visited rooms of the Vatican Museums alone justify the time. That said, a private car to the volcanic hill towns of the Castelli Romani in late April, when the wildflowers are out and the Frascati vineyards are green, adds a dimension the city cannot offer. Orvieto is a more considered detour, best if the traveler has a genuine interest in Etruscan antiquity or the cathedral's Signorelli frescoes. We counsel anchoring in Rome and treating any excursion as a single unhurried day, not an overnight.

How to do it well
