Whether to base in the Luberon or the Alpilles for the full stay
Both corridors are unmistakably Provençal, but they feel different in the hand. The Luberon — anchored by Gordes, Ménerbes and Bonnieux — offers wilder scenery, more seclusion and a slightly longer drive from Marseille or Avignon TGV. The Alpilles, centered on Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Les Baux, sit closer to Arles and its cultural calendar, with flatter terrain that suits evening walks into village squares. For a milestone celebration we often recommend splitting two nights between the two, using a private car to move mid-stay, so the journey itself becomes part of the itinerary.
How to do it well
The counsel our advisors give travelers planning this journey:
- Book the finest luxury properties in the Luberon and Alpilles no later than January for summer stays — July and August dates at the top tier are claimed by February at the latest.
- The lavender plateau above Valensole peaks in late June to mid-July; if the lavender is central to the occasion, lock dates by October of the preceding year and plan around the bloom forecast, which we monitor for clients.
- Arrange a private wine cellar visit in Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Bandol at least six to eight weeks ahead — the best domaines do not advertise and access is entirely by introduction.
- For a celebration dinner at a two- or three-Michelin-star address in the region — Oustau de Baumanière in Les Baux or La Chassagnette near Arles — reserve the moment your travel dates are confirmed, as the best tables on weekends go within days of the reservation window opening.
