The experiences

- A private anchorage in Cala Macarella, accessed by dinghy at first light before the day-tripper ferries arrive, arranged entirely around your schedule.
- A guided snorkel through the Parc Natural de s'Albufera des Grau marine reserve, where Posidonia oceanica meadows shelter octopus, sea bream and the occasional sunfish.
- A market morning in Ciutadella's Plaça de la Llibertat followed by a private lunch aboard prepared by your onboard chef using the morning's catch and local mahón cheese.

A sense of the rhythm

The Tramuntana, Menorca's northerly wind, tends to fill in by midday, so mornings are often spent exploring coastal villages on foot or by kayak, and afternoons are given over to sailing. Evenings settle into whichever cove offers shelter, the chef working around the fresh produce and seafood sourced that day ashore.
Whether to base the journey from Maó or Ciutadella
Maó, the island's deep natural harbour and capital, offers the most complete provisioning, the easiest charter-base logistics and direct ferry connections if any guest joins mid-journey. Ciutadella, on the western tip, is architecturally richer and places you immediately closer to the wilder northern coves of Cala Morell and Cala en Brut. Forest Travel typically opens from Maó and closes in Ciutadella, giving clients the full arc of the island without retracing any water — though the reverse works equally well depending on arrival logistics.
How to do it well

- Secure your crewed charter by January for July and August departures; the finest bareboat and crewed yachts on the island are contracted by February and mid-summer demand is intense.
- The shoulder months of late May, June and September offer calmer seas, fewer anchored neighbours and the same quality of light — June in particular sees long evenings and the island before its peak crowds.
- The Festes de Sant Joan in Ciutadella fall on 23–24 June and involve horseback processions through the old city; timing a harbour arrival to coincide is worth the planning.
- Pack reef shoes and a light wetsuit layer for early-season snorkelling — water temperatures in May and June hover around 20–22 °C and the marine life is notably more active than in August.
