Luxury Skiing in Cortina d'Ampezzo and the Dolomites After the 2026 Olympics
The first winter after the Milano Cortina Games: what Cortina hosted, what it left behind, how the Dolomiti Superski area works, and how to plan a luxury ski week in a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
- Cortina hosted women's alpine skiing on the Olympia delle Tofane, curling, and the sliding events at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, held from 6 to 22 February 2026; it first hosted the Winter Games in 1956.
- Cortina's own ski area, Cortina Skiworld, has 120 km of runs and 35 lifts, with 95% snowmaking coverage, inside Dolomiti Superski: 1,200 km of slopes and 450 lifts across 12 resorts.
- The Dolomiti Superski season pass is valid from 28 November 2026 to 2 May 2027; Cortina's own 2026–27 dates had not been published at the time of writing.
- The Sella Ronda circuit is 44 km, 23 km of it skied, in about six hours; the Dolomites have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2009.
- Cortina is 162 km from Venice Marco Polo Airport and 130 km from Treviso, with a heliport at Fiames.
The short answer
Cortina d'Ampezzo is the Dolomites' most glamorous resort, and the winter after the Milano Cortina 2026 Games is a good one to see it. It combines its own ski area, Cortina Skiworld, with access to the whole of Dolomiti Superski, the Sella Ronda circuit and a landscape that UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage site in 2009. It suits skiers who care as much about the long lunch, the scenery and the town as about the mileage.
What Cortina hosted, and what it left behind
The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics ran from 6 to 22 February 2026. Cortina staged women's alpine skiing on the Olympia delle Tofane, the curling tournaments and the bobsleigh, skeleton and luge events, then the Paralympic Games from 6 to 15 March, including the Closing Ceremony at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium. It was Cortina's second Winter Games: the first were in 1956, and the Olympia delle Tofane run owes its name to them. The women's World Cup has raced there every year since 1993.
For skiers, the legacy is on the mountain. Cortina Skiworld reports the technical upgrade of the Olympia slope and a new ten-seat Lacedel–Socrepes gondola, 1.33 km long, carrying 3,000 people an hour; the Cortina Skyline gondola has linked the Tofane and Cinque Torri areas since December 2021. The new sliding centre has international luge events planned through 2030.
The skiing
Cortina Skiworld, the consortium of Cortina's lift companies, has 120 km of runs and 35 lifts, with 95% snowmaking coverage. Beyond it lies Dolomiti Superski: 1,200 km of slopes and 450 lifts across 12 resorts, all on one pass. Its best-known circuit, the Sella Ronda, is 44 km long, 23 km of it skied and the rest on lifts, and takes about six hours; the First World War ski tour runs to around 80 km. The most reliable snow in the Alps falls in January and February, and March brings longer, sunnier days.
The 2026–27 season
The Dolomiti Superski season pass is valid from 28 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. Cortina Skiworld had not published its own 2026–27 opening and closing dates at the time of writing, so individual lifts and runs will open as each company confirms them. Every other resort's dates are in the 2026–27 ski season guide.
Beyond the pistes
Cortina's history is part of the skiing. The open-air museums of the Great War at Cinque Torri, Lagazuoi and Sass de Stria together form the largest in the Dolomites, and Lagazuoi, which Cortina's tourism board calls the most perforated mountain in the Dolomites, is marked along its route by 130 plaques. For non-skiers, the town itself, the mountain huts and the scenery fill the day.
Getting there, and how we plan it
Cortina is 162 km from Venice Marco Polo Airport, 130 km from Treviso, 170 km from Innsbruck and 260 km from Verona, with daily buses from Venice airport and a heliport at Fiames. We arrange the private transfer, the home or suite in town, private ski guides who know the Sella Ronda and the war routes, and the tables at the mountain huts. Cortina pairs naturally with Venice or the rest of Italy; to compare it with other Alpine resorts, see Courchevel or St. Moritz and our Switzerland ski guide. To begin, speak with an advisor.
Questions, answered.
Yes. Cortina hosted women's alpine skiing on the Olympia delle Tofane, curling and the sliding events at the Milano Cortina 2026 Games, and Cortina Skiworld reports an upgraded Olympia slope and a new Lacedel–Socrepes gondola. Add 120 km of local runs, the 1,200 km of Dolomiti Superski on the same pass and a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, and it is one of the Alps' most rewarding ski weeks.
The Dolomiti Superski season pass is valid from 28 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. Cortina Skiworld had not published its own 2026–27 opening and closing dates at the time of writing, so individual lifts and runs will open as each company confirms them. January and February bring the most reliable snow in the Alps, and March longer, sunnier days.
Cortina Skiworld has 120 km of runs and 35 lifts, with 95% snowmaking coverage. It is part of Dolomiti Superski, which covers 1,200 km of slopes and 450 lifts across 12 resorts on a single pass. The best-known circuit, the Sella Ronda, is 44 km long, 23 km of it skied, and takes about six hours.
The Sella Ronda is a circuit around the Sella massif, 44 km long, of which 23 km is skied and 21 km covered by lifts, taking about six hours. It belongs to Dolomiti Superski, so it is covered by the same pass as Cortina. Because it starts beyond Cortina's own area, we usually plan it as a guided day with a private transfer.
