When to go
November to March, when the southern summer opens Patagonia's trails and long, luminous days lengthen every horizon. Your advisor times it to the light, the crowds and your own calendar.
The experiences
A sense of what this journey can hold — each one arranged privately and shaped to you:
- A private vehicle and driver-guide navigates the Carretera Austral from Puerto Montt south through the Cochamó valley and the hanging glaciers of Queulat, stopping only where your pace dictates.
- A dedicated zodiac crossing of Lago Grey brings you within reach of the calving face of Grey Glacier, arranged for the hour when morning light hits the ice and day-trippers have not yet arrived.
- A private W-trek guide monitors the CONAF weather channel each night and re-sequences the day's stages — Mirador Las Torres, Valle del Francés, Lago Skottsberg — so the signature viewpoints are reached in clear windows, not cloud.
- A camp dinner in the wind, at a table set on the steppe with a chef, a fire, and no other party within earshot, closing the final trekking day on the southern ice field rim.
A sense of the rhythm
Days on the Carretera Austral feel unhurried and roadside — gravel pull-offs, sudden waterfalls, estancias that appear without signage. Once inside Torres del Paine, the rhythm sharpens: early starts, tactical route decisions made the night before, afternoons that earn their rest. The contrast between driving freedom and mountain precision is the emotional architecture of the whole journey.
Whether to do the full W trek on foot or substitute a horseback day in the Valle del Francés
The W trek on foot gives you the physical accumulation that makes the final morning at Mirador Las Torres feel genuinely earned, and our guide can adjust pace for mixed fitness levels across the group. Substituting one day on horseback through the Valle del Francés is not a shortcut — it is a different sensory experience that Chilean estancia culture has practiced for two centuries and that accesses terrain the trail does not cross. The honest answer depends on your group's fitness horizon and how much you want the body to register the landscape. We advise deciding after speaking with the guide, who will have read your intake notes before the journey begins.
How to do it well
The counsel our advisors give travelers planning this journey:
- Book the Carretera Austral private vehicle no later than October for a November–February departure, as skilled bilingual driver-guides with expedition-vehicle permits on that road are limited and are taken first by long itineraries.
- The W trek requires a CONAF-issued trekking permit for Torres del Paine that opens online in early August for the following high season — we hold an allocation, but the window closes fast for the best-positioned campsites on the circuit.
- Plan arrival in Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales with a buffer night: Patagonian weather causes flight diversions from Balmaceda and Punta Arenas several times each season, and a lost day mid-trek cannot be recovered without restructuring the Grey Glacier crossing.
- October and late March offer smaller crowds on the W and more dramatic, variable light than the peak January–February window — our strongest advice for travelers who want solitude at Mirador Las Torres is to target the first two weeks of November.
What only your advisor can open
The difference between a good trip and an unrepeatable one is access — and access is a relationship, not a booking. Every guide, room and moment is chosen and sequenced for you.
Who it's for
Travelers who value privacy, time and doing it once — beautifully — and who would rather have one trusted advisor orchestrate every detail than assemble it themselves.
Estimated investment
From US$9,800 per traveler, based on double occupancy — scaled to your dates, party size and level of privacy. A starting point, not a final quote; confirmed once your advisor tailors the itinerary.
