The diving here is driven by current and tide, so the plan follows the water rather than the clock. Between charged channel dives the pace eases to long surface intervals under an open sky. It is demanding, exhilarating and worth the distance south.

The south or North Male for big-fish diving

The Southern Atolls sit in the path of stronger currents and open-ocean traffic, delivering the reliable pelagic action serious divers travel for. North Male is easier to reach and hugely varied but gentler on the whole. Come south when the big fish are the reason for the trip.

How to do it well
