Whether to base the family in Parikia or in Naoussa for the full stay

Parikia, the capital, gives younger children a pedestrian old town to roam, a waterfront gelato ritual and immediate ferry access if plans change — it is the more self-contained base. Naoussa is smaller, slightly quieter at midday and better positioned for the northern beaches at Kolymbithres and Santa Maria, which suit families with stronger swimmers and teenagers who want water sports. Families with a wide age range — say a seven-year-old and a fifteen-year-old — often find Naoussa the shrewder choice because its harbour life and beach proximity satisfy both ends of the spectrum. We frequently arrange a split stay: four nights in one village and three in the other, which also lets older children compare the two harbours and form an opinion of their own.
