When to go to the polar regions

Antarctica's season runs roughly November through March — early for pristine ice, later for whales and active colonies. The Arctic and Svalbard favor May through September for pack-ice wildlife and the midnight sun. The finest cabins and ice-class vessels are limited and claimed twelve to eighteen months ahead; we hold the right window for your wildlife priorities before it reaches any list.

Private yacht or small expedition ship?

It depends on autonomy versus reach. A private yacht gives you the entire vessel, your own pace and anchorages no schedule dictates — ideal for a single family or group. A small ice-class ship brings genuine polar reach, certified expedition staff, and tools like submersibles and helicopters. We arrange whichever delivers the access you want.

Fitness, age and safety

We match terrain to the travelers, never the reverse. Itineraries are calibrated to mobility and pace, with rest built in, and before departure we confirm physician access, on-vessel medical capability and named evacuation cover.

What it typically starts from

As an indicative guide, a luxury polar expedition typically starts from around US$25,000 per person, with private-yacht charters considerably higher. We share a starting range early and never quote a final, all-in figure until the journey is designed.

What an expedition fare includes — and what it does not

There is no regulated definition of "all-inclusive" at sea, which is why two quotes that look alike can differ by thousands once you read them. Across the premium expedition operators the pattern is consistent enough to plan against:

• Almost always included: every scheduled landing and Zodiac excursion, the expedition team and its lecture programme, loan of the parka and rubber boots, all meals, and house wine, beer and spirits with them.
• Almost always extra: kayaking, camping on the ice, helicopter and submersible time, scuba, and premium spirits or listed wines. On polar itineraries these are capacity-limited and sell out long before the sailing does, so they are booked with the cabin, not on board.
• Read carefully: whether the flights to the gateway city are in the fare, whether the charter flight across the Drake is, and whether gratuities and the mandatory expedition-wear deposit are. These four move the total more than the cabin grade does.

Where a fare is genuinely inclusive it is usually the excursions that make it so — and on an expedition the excursions are the voyage, which is why the comparison is not the same one you would make on an ocean cruise.
