When to go
May through September, when long golden evenings, warm seas and the Balearics at their finest reward those who travel in the light. Your advisor times it to the light, the crowds and your own calendar.
The experiences
A sense of what this journey can hold — each one arranged privately and shaped to you:
- A private dawn crossing of the Es Freus channel before the day-tripper ferries arrive, reading the tide with your skipper to thread the shallows between Formentera and the Ses Salines natural park.
- An anchored lunch above the white-sand bottom off Illetes, where the water holds a Caribbean transparency that no beach club on the island can replicate from the shore.
- A guided kayak excursion into the sea-caves beneath the Punta Roja cliffs, arranged privately so your catamaran is the only vessel in the cove.
- An evening mooring at the salt pans of La Mola as the light drops, watching the flamingos settle and the water turn from copper to pink while dinner is prepared on board.
A sense of the rhythm
The days move at the pace of the tide and the wind — mornings belong to the open water, afternoons to a chosen anchorage, and evenings to the slow return as the island empties of its day visitors. There is no fixed itinerary aboard; the skipper reads the conditions each morning and adjusts, so no two crossings of the Es Freus feel the same. The result is a week that feels genuinely unhurried in a place that, on land, rarely does.
Crewed catamaran versus a private villa on the island
A villa gives you a fixed address and the full ritual of a Formenteran house — market mornings, a scooter, the long lunches at Juan y Andrea — but the island's most extraordinary geography, the shallows of Illetes and the Es Freus channel, is only legible from the water. The catamaran keeps both worlds available: you can dine ashore at Restaurante Es Molí de Sal or ride into Sant Francesc Xavier for the Saturday market, and still sleep where the crowds cannot follow. For travelers who have already done Formentera from land, the yacht is the obvious next layer.
How to do it well
The counsel our advisors give travelers planning this journey:
- Book your crewed catamaran no later than January for a July or August departure — the handful of genuinely well-appointed vessels based out of Ibiza Marina that hold the Ses Salines natural-park permits are contracted by February most years.
- Time your arrival for the second week of June or the first week of September: the Es Freus channel is navigable without the peak-summer ferry congestion, the water temperature is still above 26 °C, and anchorage spots off Illetes are held without the August competition.
- Coordinate your provisioning brief with us before departure — the best Ibizan fish market runs Tuesday and Friday mornings in Santa Eulària, and your skipper can provision there the day before you board so the first lunch at anchor is already exceptional.
- If you plan to incorporate a night ashore, give us at least four months' notice for the finest luxury hotels in Formentera town: the island has very limited high-caliber accommodation and the best rooms for July and August are released in March.
What only your advisor can open
The difference between a good trip and an unrepeatable one is access — and access is a relationship, not a booking. Every guide, room and moment is chosen and sequenced for you.
Who it's for
Travelers who value privacy, time and doing it once — beautifully — and who would rather have one trusted advisor orchestrate every detail than assemble it themselves.
Estimated investment
From US$12,800 per traveler, based on double occupancy — scaled to your dates, party size and level of privacy. A starting point, not a final quote; confirmed once your advisor tailors the itinerary.
