For barefoot stillness: the Maldives and Bora Bora

If the honeymoon you picture is water, silence and total seclusion, the Maldives and Bora Bora are unmatched — overwater villas, private house reefs, and the sense of having the ocean to yourselves. The Maldives are at their finest from November through April, when the seas are calmest and the skies clearest. Bora Bora runs the opposite calendar, at its best from May through October. One practical detail worth planning around: Maldivian seaplane transfers fly in daylight only, so a late international arrival can cost you a night on the wrong island. We time the flights so it doesn't.

For romance and culture: Italy, Greece and France

For couples who want beauty, food and discovery, the Mediterranean rewards a slow, private summer — a villa above the coast, classic days on the water, and long dinners at tables that don't take online bookings. The sweet spots are late May into June, and September into early October: the sea is warm, the light is long, and the Amalfi Coast, the Cyclades and the Riviera are yours without August's crush. For adventure and awe: safari and the ocean

The most cinematic honeymoon pairs an East African safari — the savannah at dawn — with a few days on an Indian Ocean island afterward. The contrast between the two is the whole point. Time it to the wildlife: the Mara's river crossings run July through October, the southern Serengeti fills with newborn calves in January and February, and Botswana's delta is at its best in the dry months from June to October. Then fly on to Zanzibar, Mnemba or the Seychelles and do nothing at all.

If your wedding date is already fixed

Most couples come to us with the date set, which narrows the map usefully. A December or January wedding points to the Maldives, Thailand or the Serengeti's calving season. A June wedding suits Bora Bora, the Greek islands, Norway's midnight sun or a Botswana safari. September and October are the strongest months of all — the Mediterranean is still warm, the Mara is still crossing, and the Maldives are turning fine again. August is the hardest month: peak season and peak price across most of Europe, so we usually look east or south instead.

Two destinations, one journey

The honeymoons couples still talk about years later almost always have two halves — energy first, stillness second. Safari, then Zanzibar. Kyoto, then a Thai island. Rome and the Amalfi Coast. Cape Town, then the Seychelles. Ten to fourteen days is the comfortable minimum for two centres; below that the flying starts to eat the trip.
