In Cappadocia, Turkey's civil aviation authority assesses the region every dawn and grounds every balloon at once when wind or visibility fail its threshold. A grounded morning in Cappadocia need not be a lost day. The Göreme Open Air Museum opens at 08:00 and runs to 18:45, with a separate night visit from 19:00 to 23:00; foreign visitors pay at the gate, as the Museum Pass is valid only for Turkish citizens. Beyond it: the Ihlara valley on foot, the underground cities at Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, a potter's wheel in Avanos, and the Red and Rose valleys at the hour the balloons would have flown, when the light is best.

A genuine rock-cut cave suite in Cappadocia is cool, silent and extraordinary, but some have almost no natural light and no view at all, as the window is a doorway in a cliff. The underground cities at Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı in Cappadocia are narrow, low and unlit in places, so they ask for some crouching through tunnels.
