Rainforest & Wildlife Adventure — Costa Rica

When to go

Wildlife is rewarding year-round, but the dry season, roughly December to April, is usually easier for trails on the Pacific side, while green turtles typically nest at Tortuguero from about July to October.

The experiences

A sense of what this journey can hold — each one arranged privately and shaped to you:

  • A guided night walk in Monteverde's cloud forest with a private naturalist, searching for frogs, insects and nocturnal mammals.
  • A boat journey through the canals of Tortuguero, arranged privately in the early morning for birds, monkeys and caimans.
  • A guided walk on the Osa Peninsula, where a naturalist can help you look for scarlet macaws, tapirs and sloths.
  • A turtle-nesting evening on a Tortuguero beach in season, arranged with a licensed guide and treated with great care for the animals.

A sense of the rhythm

This is the most active of our Costa Rica journeys, but each region is chosen for a different habitat. You move from Monteverde to Tortuguero, and finish on the Osa Peninsula, where roads are scarce and access is often by small plane or boat. Early starts are the rule, with long, quiet middays at your lodge.

How to do it well

The counsel our advisors give travelers planning this journey:

  • Pack neutral clothing and good binoculars; a private guide carries a scope, but you will use your own constantly.
  • Do not stack too many regions: Osa and Tortuguero both reward a longer stay.
  • Ask your advisor to match the dates with turtle nesting if that is a priority, since it is seasonal.
  • Accept the rain in the green season, because animals are often more active just after it.

What only your advisor can open

The difference between a good trip and an unrepeatable one is access — and access is a relationship, not a booking. Every guide, room and moment is chosen and sequenced for you.

Who it's for

This is for travelers who care about the animals and the landscapes more than the pool, and who are happy to rise early. It suits couples, friends and families with older children.

Estimated investment

From around US$1,000 per person per night, based on double occupancy — scaled to your dates, party size and level of privacy. A starting point, not a final quote; confirmed once your advisor tailors the itinerary.

Designed entirely around you

Nothing here is a package. A Forest Travel advisor shapes the whole journey and stays one message away before and throughout your trip.

Common Questions

Questions, answered.

They are different. Osa is the wildest and has large mammals and macaws, Tortuguero is the best for canals, birds and turtle nesting, and Monteverde excels at cloud forest, hummingbirds and night walks. A nine-day journey can include all three if you move carefully.

Around nine days is a comfortable minimum for three contrasting habitats. With fewer days, we suggest choosing two regions and staying longer in each, because wildlife is found by spending time with a good guide and not by crossing the country.

Planning starts from around US$1,000 per person per night. The figure rises with remote regions, small-plane transfers and the amount of private guiding you choose. Your advisor prepares a proposal with each element clearly priced per traveler before you decide anything.

The dry season, roughly December to April, is usually the easiest on the Pacific side. Humpback whales are possible off the south Pacific coast in two windows, around December to April and July to October. Green turtles typically nest at Tortuguero from about July to October.

Not reliably, and we say so plainly. Jaguars are rare and very hard to see. Tapirs, sloths, monkeys, macaws and many birds are far more likely with a good naturalist guide. Your advisor sets expectations honestly and arranges the best guiding available.

Yes, generally. The Caribbean side, including Tortuguero, has no marked dry season and can be wet at any time. Rain does not stop the canal trips, and many travelers find the forest beautiful in it, but your advisor will advise you on the right clothing and timing.

Moderately. Early starts and uneven forest trails are part of it, but the walking is at a naturalist's pace, with stops. Tell your advisor about any mobility concerns, and the days can be adjusted to suit you, for example by favoring boat and vehicle-based viewing.

Entry requirements depend on your passport, so check your government's official source before booking. Your advisor confirms the details for your nationality. For safety, follow your government's current travel advice, and ask your doctor about health preparation for remote regions.
