The Best Time to Visit Norway — Fjords, Midnight Sun and Northern Lights

Two Norways, two seasons — the green fjords under the midnight sun, and the Arctic under the aurora. How to time a luxury Norway journey, and what it starts from.

Key takeaways
  • Summer (June–August) is for the fjords, the midnight sun and hiking; winter (late September–March) is for the Northern Lights.
  • May and September are beautiful shoulders — fewer travelers, fjords still glorious, and the first/last aurora.
  • The fjords (Geiranger, Nærøyfjord) and Bergen anchor a summer trip; Tromsø and the Arctic anchor a winter aurora trip.
  • A private expedition vessel or the classic coastal voyage is among the finest ways to see the fjords.
  • As an indicative guide, a bespoke Norway journey starts from around US$1,500 per person per day — the final cost depends on the season, vessel and private guiding.
  • We design around what you want — fjords and midnight sun, or Arctic and aurora — and time it precisely.

Two Norways

Norway is really two destinations, defined by season. Summer (June–August) is the green Norway: deep fjords, waterfalls, the midnight sun and long days of hiking and cruising. Winter (late September–March) is the Arctic Norway: the Northern Lights, snow, dog-sledding and the polar atmosphere of the far north. Each is wonderful; you choose by what you want to see.

The fjords and the midnight sun

For the fjords — Geirangerfjord, the Nærøyfjord, the Lofoten Islands — and the midnight sun, travel May to August, with June–July the peak of light. A private expedition vessel or the classic coastal voyage offers the finest, most flexible way to experience them.

The Arctic and the aurora

For the Northern Lights, head to Tromsø and the Arctic from late September to March, peaking in the dark midwinter. We pair aurora chasing with snow activities, glass lodges and the drama of the polar landscape. (The lights are never guaranteed — we maximize the odds with location, timing and flexibility.)

Why it rewards an advisor

The finest fjord-side hotels and Arctic lodges, a private vessel among the fjords, expert guides, helicopter access and seamless logistics across a long, narrow country — the curation makes the difference.

What a luxury Norway journey starts from

As a luxury advisory we quote a from-price, not a final one. Indicatively, a bespoke journey starts from around US$1,500 per person per day, rising with a private expedition vessel, remote lodges, private guiding and aviation. The real figure depends on the season and how privately you travel — we share the starting point candidly and design the rest around you.

Common Questions

Questions, answered.

It depends what you want. Summer (June–August) is for the fjords, midnight sun and hiking; winter (late September–March) is for the Northern Lights and the Arctic. May and September are beautiful, quieter shoulders.

May to August, with June–July offering the midnight sun and the longest, greenest days. A private expedition vessel or the coastal voyage is the finest way to experience them.

Late September to March, in the Arctic north around Tromsø, peaking in the dark midwinter. The lights are never guaranteed, so we build in several nights and keep the itinerary flexible to chase clear skies.

Five to eight days for a focused fjord or Arctic trip; longer to combine the fjords with the Arctic or to cruise the coast. We design the length around the season and what you most want to see.

As an indicative guide, a bespoke journey starts from around US$1,500 per person per day, rising with a private expedition vessel, remote lodges, private guiding and aviation. We give a clear from-price and never quote a final total until it's designed around you — it depends on the season, vessel and guiding.

Both are excellent — Norway's far north (Tromsø) offers some of the highest aurora reliability plus the fjords, while Iceland is more compact and an easy stopover. We can compare them for your dates and design either.

Very — fjords, wildlife, dog-sledding and the midnight sun or aurora captivate children, and we tailor the guiding and pace for younger travelers with family-friendly lodges and a private vessel where it fits.

Six to twelve months for the finest lodges, fjord hotels and private vessels, especially over the summer fjord season and the winter aurora peak. The earlier we begin, the more we can hold.
